Most dentists make their career decision in early college or late high school. Therefore, it's never too early or too late to do some serious thinking on whether you should pursue dentistry as a career.

Several days of doing exploratory work are highly necessary in finding out what dentistry has to offer and whether or not this career will meet your needs and expectations. You need to be sure that you are aware of what this career entails and that your personality fits this specific career. It is recommended that you read different books on dentistry, go to a dentist's office and discuss with him about his job.

Once the decision is final and you are prepared to become a dentist the next step is getting into dental school. In order to do that you need two-four years of college. In addition to that, you'll need good grades in courses such as math, biology, physics and chemistry.

Some countries train medical school graduates to specialize in dentistry, others have high school graduates enrolled in dental school. Some schools prefer people who have seen the world while others are very academically oriented.

Keep in mind that different people are suited to different careers. Only by choosing your favorite occupation and excelling in it, you will be able to make a difference in this society.

As many of us already know, dentists are among the better-paid members of the society. The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics has reported an average income of $162,960 for the salaried dentists of the year 2007. A dentist's income however will vary greatly according to specialty, experience, location, willingness to work long hours and number of years in practice. Self-employed dentists usually earn more than salaried dentists do. The advantage of being a salaried dentist lies in the benefits you receive from your employer including malpractice insurance, health insurance paid holidays and vacations. Private dentists on the other hand must provide their own life insurance, health insurance, retirement plans and other benefits like any other business owner. Dentists who specialize, such as periodontists and oral surgeons have the highest earnings. Dental technicians in large laboratories who specialize in a few procedures have a lower income than those employed in small laboratories who perform a large number of tasks.

There are numerous benefits that come along with a career in dentistry. These benefits include of course the prestige and gratification of working in the health care field, flexibility, job security, and a sense of personal satisfaction from helping others.
